DO I QUALIFY FOR SOCIAL SECURITY?
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS: SSDI AND SSI.
SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY INSURANCE (SSDI)
The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program pays benefits to you if you meet three criteria:
- YOU ARE DISABLED.
- YOU HAVE WORKED FOR AT LEAST FIVE OF THE 10 YEARS JUST PRIOR TO THE START OF YOUR DISABILITY (EXCEPTIONS EXIST IF YOU’RE UNDER 31 YEARS OLD).
- YOU HAVE EARNED ENOUGH WORK CREDITS BY PAYING SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES.
Even if you haven’t worked enough, you may still be eligible for disability benefits.
SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME (SSI)
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) pays benefits to you if you meet certain criteria:
- YOU ARE DISABLED.
- YOU MEET CERTAIN FINANCIAL QUALIFICATIONS (YOU DON’T HAVE TOO MUCH INCOME OR TOO MANY ASSETS).
